New work begins like a crack in the bark of a tree – my ideas come from close observation of natural phenomena and from my response to them. I am interested in the beauty of textures, forms and processes. Slowly these details evolve into broader ideas and concepts and link together so that nature becomes my mirror of human nature.
My creative endeavors weave together the world around me and the world I experience in my extensive travels - nature, community and the relationships that bind them together - to reveal the fluidity of cultural boundaries and the ways we connect—viscerally and emotionally
I strive to invite reflection on the spaces we inhibit, the identities we forge and the histories we carry through layered compositions and tactile surfaces in a range of media.
I enjoy working with a variety of materials and processes - painting, collage, clay and photography are my favorites - and I choose media depending on the urgency of the thought and the concepts I want to explore. I like to improvise and explore materials, so that characteristics of the medium or a new, found material inform the process. It often takes me a long time to formulate my visual concepts in my mind before I can begin the process of creating with materials. Each work remains a part of me long after its completion.
The creative focus of Andy Goldsworthy’s work in nature, of Richard Estes’ reflections, and of Jeff Shapiro’s ceramic forms inspire me.
